James Atlay

Family
Atlay was the second son of the Rev. Henry Atlay and Elizabeth Hovell. Atlay married Frances Turner in 1859.
Education
He entered St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1836, and graduated with a B.A. in 1840. He was elected fellow in 1842 and acquired his M.A. in 1843. He served as tutor of St. John's from 1846 to 1859. In 1850 he obtained a B.D. and, in 1859, a D.D.
Church Appointments and Service
Atlay was ordained deacon in 1842 and, in the following year, priest. In 1856, he was appointed as Whitehall preacher, and in 1858-59, as Cambridge select preacher. He succeeded W. F. Hook as vicar of Leeds in 1859, and was appointed residential canon at Ripon in 1861. In 1867, he refused the bishopric of Calcutta, but in the following year accepted the bishopric of Hereford.
