Richard Bagot
1782 -
15 May 1854

Family

Richard Bagot was the sixth son of William, first Lord Bagot, by Louisa St. John, daughter of the second Viscount Bolingbroke. In 1806, he married Harriet Villiers.

Education

Bagot went to school at Rugby before entering Christ Church, Oxford, in 1800. He graduated with his B.A. in 1803. He was elected fellow of All Soul's in 1804, and acquired his M.A. in 1806 and D.D. in 1829.

Church Appointments and Service

He was ordained in 1806. He was appointed prebendary of Lichtfield in 1812, canon of Worcester in 1817, canon of Windsor in 1822, dean of Canterbury in 1827, and bishop of Oxford in 1829. From Oxford, he was translated, in 1845, to the See of Bath and Wells.

Footnote

"Bagot was bishop of Oxford at the date of the Oxford movement, and was reluctantly forced to play a part in its history." The excitement of these years ruined his health, and soon after his translation to Bath and Wells, "he suffered from a temporary mental derangement, and his see was for a time administered, in accordance with a special act of parliament, by the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol." The peace of his final years was spoilt by controversy with Archdeacon Denison. -- DNB 1: 871-72
