Footnote

"Bardsley's sympathies were with the evangelical party," although upon his consecration as bishop of Carlisle, "he publicly declared his intention of being the bishop not of a party, but of the whole church. . . . Although no profound nor exact scholar, Bardsley was a thorough and capable administrator." -- DNB 1901-11: 92-3
