Family

Christopher Bethell was the second son of the Rev. Richard Bethell and Ann Clitherow.

Education

He was educated at King's College, Cambridge. He graduated with his B.A. in 1796, and proceeded to take an M.A. in 1799 and D.D. in 1817.

Church Appointments and Service

He was appointed dean of Chichester in 1814. In March 1824, he was consecrated bishop of Gloucester, from which he was translated, in April 1830, to the See of Exeter, and in October of the same year to the See of Bangor, where his ignorance of the Welsh language hindered his usefulness.

Noteworthy Publications

His principal publication is A General View of the Doctrine of Regeneration in Baptism (1821).
