Robert John Eden

Family

Robert Eden was the third son of William Eden, first baron Auckland. In 1825 he married Mary Hunt of Derbyshire, by whom he had numerous children. Upon the death of his brother, George, in January 1849, he became third baron Auckland.

Education

After graduating from Eton, he went to Magdalene College, Cambridge, from which he graduated M.A. in 1819 and B.D. and D.D. in 1847.

Church Appointments and Service

From 1823 to 1825 he served as rector of Eyam, Derbyshire, and from 1825 to 1835 as rector of Hertingfordbury, Hertfordshire. From 1835 to 1847 he was vicar of Battersea. During these years, from 1831 to 1837, he served as chaplain to William IV, and afterwards, until 1847, as chaplain to Victoria. On 23 May 1847 he was consecrated bishop of Sodor and Man. On 2 June 1854 Eden was translated to the see of Bath and Wells, which he held until his resignation in September 1869.

Noteworthy Publications

He was the author of three episcopal charges, 1855, 1858, and 1861, and edited The Journal and Correspondence of William, Lord Auckland.
